A sports star on the celebrity edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire used all four of her lifelines on a question many thought was easy. Dame Laura Kelly, whose forte is cycling, was stumped by a movie question on the famous ITV quiz show, hosted by Jeremy Clarkson.

The show sees each participant take on 15 questions, as they increase in difficulty, in a bid to win the grand prize with the help of four lifelines: 50:50, Phone a Friend, Ask the Audience and Ask the Host. Playing for £16,000, the Olympian, who was hoping to raise funds for the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, found herself to be a bit stuck. Former Top Gear host, Clarkson, asked her: “Which of these 1980s films have sequels called Afterlife and Frozen Empire?” with the options: A Top Gun, B The Terminator, C Ghostbusters, or D Blade Runner.

By that point, the Dame had already used up one of her four lifelines. She opted for Ask the Audience when asked about the football anthem associated with West Ham fans. Over 80% of the studio audience correctly identified it as Forever Blowing Bubbles, although surprisingly, 2% chose You’ll Never Walk Alone.

But the help gave her the advantage she needed to progress through the game – although it wasn’t long before she found herself struggling once more.

On the movie question, Laura decided to Ask the Host, relying on Jeremy’s expertise but was shocked when he couldn’t offer any assistance. He ruled out The Terminator and Top Gun, however the uncertainty around Blade Runner having multiple sequels remained.

Choosing to narrow her chances with the 50/50 lifeline, which left just Ghostbusters and Blade Runner as possible answers, Laura then decided to call a friend for further help. She chose to give her dad a call, hopeful that he would help her get it right. He responded: “I really don’t know, It’s going to be a guess, and I’d go for Blade Runner.”

Fans at home bashed the question, as they were shocked that no one was sure of the answer. Posting to social media, one wrote: “How the heck did neither this Olympian or Jeremy Clarkson know that Afterlife and Frozen Empire are Ghostbusters movies? The latter literally came out last year! Such an easy question, it could have been a thousand-pound one.”

Another added: “All these questions have been easy peasy,” while one more said: “Stop faffing about! It’s Ghostbusters!”

Still feeling unsure, Laura decided to take the money and walk away instead of risking a wrong answer. She managed to secure £8,000 for her chosen charity, The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust.
