Beverley Callard, the beloved Coronation Street star, has opened up about the heartbreaking moment she had to leave I’m A Celebrity South Africa, revealing that she had no idea she was battling breast cancer at the time. The 69-year-old actress became overwhelmed with emotion as she revisited her exit from the jungle on Tuesday night, speaking candidly about the health scare that would change her life forever.
The series, filmed in Kruger National Park last year, saw Beverley forced to leave on medical grounds after what was initially thought to be a routine health issue. But four months later, she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, a shocking revelation that caught everyone by surprise.
In an emotional Instagram video, Beverley explained how a “funny turn” in the jungle led to her exit: “I just watched my exit on I’m A Celeb and it made me cry all over again. Of course, I didnāt know then that I had cancer, but I just knew that in the last couple of days, I hadnāt been feeling very well.”

Beverley went on to describe what happened during the incident that led to her departure: āI went into the Bush Telegraph and apparently, I lost consciousness for a little while. I just wasnāt feeling myself.ā After being escorted to the medical hut, Beverley was told that she couldnāt continue the show. āThey really looked after me,ā she recalled. āThey said āyou canāt go backā. It was the start of everything.ā
Despite the shock, Beverley remained determined. āI said, āDonāt say that, donāt send me home, Iāll be fine.ā I wanted to succeed, to make it to the end. But that was the beginning of my journey with cancer. I will beat this. I will beat it,ā she vowed tearfully.
On the show, Beverley had confided in her campmates, saying: āI didnāt feel very well this morning, had a bit of a funny turn, and theyāve said I canāt come back. Iāve got to go. Iām absolutely gutted. I donāt want to go.”
Her departure left the camp in shock, with fellow contestants visibly upset. Adam Thomas broke down in tears, declaring, āItās so sad to see her go out like that,ā while Scarlett Moffatt added, āThe camp wonāt be the same without her.ā

She said: ‘I’ve got something to tell you all. I didn’t feel very well and I had a bit of a funny turn and they’ve said I can’t come back in I’ve got to go. ‘I’m absolutely gutted. I don’t want to go’

Ashley Roberts reassured her, ‘You’ve got to look after yourself and we will see you in a few days’. Bev added: ‘I don’t want this to finish. I wanted to prove that older women could do it’

Reflecting on her time in the jungle, Beverley said: āIt was the experience of a lifetime. The people were amazing. Yes, we were hungry and dirty, but it was wonderful. I had the best time of my life.ā
Beverley, who previously competed in the 2020 season of I’m A Celebrity at Gwrych Castle in Wales, said that this time felt far more rewarding: āThis time completely overshadowed 2020. Iām so glad I said yes because I did have to think about it. Iāve been covered in bugs beforeādid I really want to do it again? But this time I could do everything. The sunshine and the climate changed everything. It completely knocked 2020 out of the park.ā
Her brave admission comes after Beverley gave an update on her health journey, revealing that she had undergone surgery for breast cancer. Doctors successfully removed the cancer but found that it had spread to one of her lymph nodes. “They took three lymph nodes, and cancer was in the first one. It’s not in the second or third, so itās small, but itās there,ā she explained in a candid Instagram video.
The actress also shared her anxiety about the future: āThe lymph node containing the cancer will be sent to America to see how aggressive the disease is,ā she said. “If itās aggressive, Iāll need chemo first and then radiotherapy. If itās not, Iāll just have radiotherapy as planned. Weāll see.”
Beverley, who has been battling the disease since her diagnosis in February, has opened up about her emotional rollercoaster since moving to Dublin for her role on Fair City.
Despite the challenges, Beverleyās resilience shines through: “In one way, it was good news that the surgeries worked well, but because it’s in the lymph nodes, it’s still a worry. The waiting time is an absolute pain. But Iām sure a lot of you have been through the same thing,” she said.
Fans and well-wishers have flooded her social media with messages of support, admiring her strength and courage as she continues to face this battle head-on. With her diagnosis and treatment ongoing, Beverleyās story has become a poignant reminder of the importance of staying strong in the face of adversity.
