Northumbria Police officers confirmed the death of a woman at Seaburn beach is not being treated as suspicious. The woman was found dead at the scene at around 5am on Friday morning.

Now, in an update issued on Saturday, the force confirmed the woman had been identified and her next-of-kin informed. The police said a report would now be prepared for the coroner.

In a statement, a Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just after 5am yesterday (Friday), we received a report that the body had been found on Seaburn Beach in Whitburn. Emergency services attended the scene where the body of a woman was sadly located.

“A police presence remained in the area on Friday, while officers carried out further enquiries with partner agencies. Formal identification has now taken place, and the woman’s next of kin have been informed. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, and a report will be prepared for the coroner in due course.”
