Writer Leo Tolstoy warned that arrogance stops anyone from becoming a better person, soΒ Prince HarryΒ haughtily declaring his job to be “Prince of England” sets the hubris alarm bells ringing. The Duke of Sussex, 41, was appearing on the Joe Marler Will See You Now podcast and was quizzed by the ex-England rugbyΒ and TheΒ TraitorsΒ TV star about his profession.
Harry explained: “Full-time dad.Β British ArmyΒ veteran. Prince of England. Duke. But for today, I don’t know. What do you want?” He finally settled on the title “Duke” – which is exactly what he is. The arrogance surfaces when you consider: “Where does Harry see himself in terms of importance?”
Because forgive me if I’m wrong, but if his brother William is Prince of Wales and Harry is declaring himself the ‘Prince of England,’ that is not a slip of the tongue. That’s a deliberate dig at his brother.
It is also displays a staggeringly poor grasp of reality – there is, and has never been, any such title as ‘Prince of England’. Prince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, yes. But not just England.
It’s also a damning insight into how he still perceives himself: a senior, working royal and a key foundation stone in our nation’s monarchy.
This comes from the guy who turned his back on the UK in 2020 – as the nation faced a global pandemic – for California, then repeatedly trashed our Royal Family for money in books, on TV and to anyone willing to pay.
Look, Harry’s ‘Prince of England’ quip may have been unintentional.
He hardly boasts a razor-sharp wit – he’s not Oscar Wilde or George Bernard Shaw.
Harry often struggles on live TV, even when only interviewed by ‘Sussex-friendly’ presenters who wonβt actually grill him on his behaviour or controversial statements.
But even Harry must have known what he said could easily be interpreted as a rather cruel jibe at his brother.
Far from finding peace with his slighted, estranged older sibling – Harry is looking to outrank him!
