‘DWTS’ Pro Hints at Retirement After Long & Successful Run on the Hit Series
After two decades of quicksteps, cha-chas, and Mirrorball glory, “Dancing With the Stars” pro Val Chmerkovskiy is starting to think about what life might look like beyond the ballroom. The three-time champion, 39, reflected on his remarkable run and hinted that his time on the hit ABC competition may be nearing its natural end during a heartfelt conversation with Danielle Fishel on her Dancing With Danielle podcast.

“I’m not delusional about the fact that my tenure on the show will eventually come to an end before the show comes to an end. And I want it that way,” he shared. “I think my life is better with the show around whether I’m on it or not. I’m a huge champion of this project.”
The ‘DWTS’ Veteran on Embracing Change
Chmerkovskiy, who first joined DWTS in 2011, understands the natural evolution of television and the talent industry. He said he’s aware producers might eventually seek younger pros to keep the show fresh. Still, he isn’t bitter about the possibility — instead, he’s grateful for the chance to contribute to its legacy.
Over the years, Chmerkovskiy has become one of the franchise’s most popular dancers, known for his technical skill, sharp wit, and undeniable charisma. “I’m still killing it,” he joked, after he and his current partner, influencer Alix Earle, earned a 23 out of 30 during “TikTok Night” on DWTS Season 34.
A Legacy Built on Passion & Precision
Chmerkovskiy’s impact extends far beyond choreography. With three Mirrorball trophies and a long list of celebrity partners — from actors to athletes — he’s helped countless contestants gain confidence and find joy in dance. Fans love his high standards and how he brings out the best in even the most inexperienced stars.
Despite speculation about retirement, Chmerkovskiy emphasized that his love for the show hasn’t faded. “I’m proud of what this show has done for dance, for me, and for so many people,” he said.
As for what comes next, Chmerkovskiy said he’s at peace with whatever the future holds. He made it clear that when the time comes to step aside, it will be on his own terms.
“I don’t want to hog the limelight,” he shared. “If there’s another dancer waiting in the wings, I’ll gladly step aside — you just have to earn it.”
For now, Chmerkovskiy shows no signs of slowing down. With his passion for dance and dedication to the show that made him a household name, fans can expect to see plenty more of him in the ballroom before any official goodbye.
