The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Emmerdale dated July 20. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX and YouTube.
Another huge twist has been revealed about Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) in Emmerdale.
The character was asked to leave Emmerdale Farm last week after Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) discovered information about her and John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth).
Determined to uncover her secrets, Chas stole Serena’s phone. After snooping through it, she found some images of Serena and John together.
Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) knew that John was close to Serena’s family, but the mistake the newcomer made was telling the couple that she hadn’t seen John for a few years, because these pictures proved that she saw the crazed medic while he was on the run in December 2025.
She tried to explain herself, but Robert, Chas and Aaron didn’t allow her to. Serena left the farm, but today’s episode confirmed that she had spent time at Charity Dingle’s (Emma Atkins).
They chatted, and Charity helped Serena see that it’s important for Robert and Aaron to hear her side of the story.
When Serena arrived back at Emmerdale Farm, she found Ross Barton (Michael Parr) accusing Robert and Aaron of breaking into Home Farm. She managed to get Ross to leave by pointing out that he didn’t actually have any evidence to back up his claim.
Once he had gone, Serena sat down and shared more information about the connection her family had with John. She explained that John visited the farm when he left the army, and didn’t think anything of it when he rocked up in December.

However, once Serena’s mum spotted John on the evening news, and learnt that he was wanted for the most horrific crimes, things changed.
Ultimately, Serena’s experience mirrors that of many Emmerdale residents. John’s charm made it easy to trust him, but the truth about who he really was left everyone forced to reassess the man they thought they knew.
Because Robert recognised this, he decided to let Serena stay. She made a comment about how the lies would stop, and she wouldn’t let Robert and Aaron down again.
Back at Home Farm, Ross returned after failing the task to identify the person who broke in. Kim Tate (Claire King) then revealed that she’s realised the culprit has stolen a USB stick.

Just as the episode ended, we saw the thief…and it was Serena.
She was sat alone on her laptop, going through some folders that were on the USB stick.
But what exactly is she searching for?
For a while, Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) had footage of Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) killing John saved on a USB stick, but surely there is no way Serena knows about this? Plus, it was deleted by Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley).
So what else is she after?
