“TRY BABYPROOFING A 500-YEAR-OLD CASTLE.” 👶🏰 Castle Impossible stars Daphne and Ian Fig are preparing for their first baby — but fans are stunned by the unique challenge they’re facing before the little one even arrives. 😳❤️ While most parents worry about stairs, sharp corners, and cabinets, the couple is trying to make a centuries-old French château safe for a newborn. Now, they’re revealing the unexpected realities of raising a baby inside one of HGTV’s most ambitious renovation projects, and viewers can’t get enough of the chaos.

EXCLUSIVE: Pregnant ‘Castle Impossible’ Star Daphne Fig and Husband Ian Reveal What It’s Like To Babyproof a 500-Year-Old French Chateau

With a baby on the way, “Castle Impossible” stars Daphne and Ian Fig have a bundle of new upgrades to complete at the crumbling 500-year-old French fixer-upper they have been carefully renovating for more than a year now.

Having focused much of their efforts on lovingly restoring the 1508 chateau to its former glory, the Figs are now turning their attention to a more urgent task: babyproofing the historic estate to ensure that it is safe for their newborn.

Daphne, who is 7 months pregnant, and Ian just announced the news that they’re expecting a child on their hit HGTV series, which premiered its second season in May.

The show follows the married renovators as they use their entire life savings to restore Chateau de Lesigny, a castle located 15 miles outside of Paris, which Daphne inherited from her grandfather.

In addition to working on all the room remodels, the Figs also run an on-site weddings and events business to generate income to maintain the 130-acre property and fund the remaining renovations, which Daphne estimates to be “about 75%” of the four-level domain.

Now, as they prepare to welcome a little prince or princess to their family in the coming months, the Figs reveal to Realtor.com® that their to-do list at the castle is also expanding due to all the babyproofing they still need to do.

“Babyproofing, I mean, we have a nursery in the chateau, which is actually right next to [the] office. That’s babyproofed, but then there’s a lot of rooms that are, like, the walls are torn out, there’s nails sticking out,” starts Ian.

“What’s interesting about a chateau, and this is true with other chateau owners, is that they’ll usually find a little cozy part of the chateau and that’s where they spend most of their time,” he continues. “For us, the salon and the office have kind of been that little corner for us, and I feel like it’s mostly there. There’s a few outlets that I’ve got to check, but we’re getting there.”

In the meantime, keeping the baby away from unfinished rooms and contained in safe spaces seems to be Daphne’s preferred babyproofing strategy.

“Can you really babyproof a chateau?” she questions, while sharing the method she plans to put in place.

“We’ll close all the doors, put the baby in the middle, and just run around, make sure they don’t get anywhere,” she says. “The baby can just stay on us.”

The plan is for the baby to stay inside the hunter’s lodge, which is one of the additional buildings on the property that Daphne and Ian renovated to serve as both their personal living quarters and a bridal suite for wedding clients.

“We are going to have the kid in our room to start with,” says Daphne. “It’s essentially two rooms. Basically, the bridal suite that we renovated last year, we’re going to have a space for baby there.”

The Figs are also spending the remaining months before the baby arrives dreaming about the experiences they’ll have with their child at their storied home.

“I cannot wait to have our baby on their little bike going down the alley,” shares Daphne, who grew up visiting her grandparents at the castle. “I have so many memories of my grandma following me and just, like, yelling out to my grandpa from the chateau to the hunter’s lodge. That’ll be fun.”

“Maybe when baby’s a little older, something that Daphne and her grandfather would always do is go on a drive around the forest,” adds Ian.

“Our friend Tony gave us his old Defender, which is a perfect safari, four-wheel car. We’ve actually started doing that again, which is really sweet. It’s just fun going for a safari ride.”

As the Figs excitedly anticipate bike rides and forest safaris with their child, there’s one children’s activity they’re not looking forward to, given the chateau’s expansive grounds.

“I feel like I’m not going to love hide-and-seek once we have a kid,” states Daphne.

“Hide-and-seek is dangerous in the chateau,” agrees Ian.

Thankfully, Daphne and Ian have already planned for more help around the chateau so they can focus on protecting their new addition as well as their various enterprises.

“We found somebody really wonderful that we hired to help us with the weddings to make it more manageable,” says Daphne. “Morning sickness was not fun, but we had a lot of support from the team that was with us filming the projects, which was so, so helpful, and honestly made it all possible.”

Having both a “renovation season” through the winter and spring, and a “wedding season” that starts up around summer, there’s been little downtime during the year for the soon-to-be family of three.

“This weekend alone, we have a wedding on Friday, a wedding on Saturday, a wedding on Sunday, and then a brunch on Monday, and so it’s four days where we can’t really be doing renovations and where I’m excited to be present to the weddings that are here,” shares Daphne.

“And stuff goes wrong, too,” notes Ian. “You know, if for some reason, there’s a leak or maybe something broke—we have these big weddings with big parties, so we’re also available for random things that usually come up. We have to be attentive to all of it.”

With baby-to-be set to take over the existing remodeled bridal suite, the Figs will unveil its “big, beautiful” replacement, as well as another romantic renovation done to the chateau’s dove tower before the end of the new season.

From creating a candlelit sanctuary to upgrading the venue's bathrooms, the Figs are constantly working to improve the castle for the "50 to 80" weddings it hosts each year.

“Anytime I’m in there, it feels like I’m walking into Disneyland or something. It feels very magical,” shares Ian. “Daphne just showed it to a couple of our wedding guests who are getting married later this year, and they were just…”

“Completely smitten,” interjects Daphne. “Oh, my god, is it romantic.”

To achieve a fairy-tale feeling inside the overhauled dove tower, the Figs were inspired by other legendary estates to adorn their space with faux flames from The Electric Candle Company.

“We put 300 magical candles in our dove tower, and the candle supplier for there is also one that did the candles for Versailles and a few other really big palaces, so that was really exciting,” explains Daphne.

From creating a candlelit sanctuary to upgrading the venue’s bathrooms, the Figs are constantly working to improve the castle for the “50 to 80” weddings it hosts each year. Perhaps one day, they will redo their own comparatively modest “I do’s.”

“[Ours] was a bit different than the very extravagant chateau weddings that we host all the time,” shares Ian.

“We got married during COVID, so we had a couple of our close friends, and it was at a courthouse,” he explains. “It was like, ‘OK, well, once COVID’s over, we’ll have a proper celebration,’ and then we’ve just been so busy. Now we’ve got a baby [on the way].”

As the Figs await their baby’s arrival, they know another wedding celebration will also come in due time.

“We’re going to do it eventually,” says Ian.

“There will be a celebration one day,” adds Daphne. “[Just] haven’t picked a date yet.”

‘Castle Impossible’ airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on HGTV and streams the next day on HBO Max.
