Labourâs plans to house asylum seekers in âpop-up buildingsâ on disused military sites has been branded a âhuge admission of failureâ by Alex Burghart.
Speaking to GB News, the Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster hit out at the move, declaring there âshouldnât be a needâ to house so many illegal migrants in Britain.
In the Governmentâs latest attempt to tackle the nationâs migrant crisis, the Home Office has confirmed that almost 1,000 asylum seekers will be housed on former bases from November.
Migrants will be moved into the Cameron Barracks in Inverness and Crowborough Training Camp in East Sussex.

Alex Burghart has hit out at Labourâs latest plan to house asylum seekers, branding it a âhuge admission of failureâ
Delivering his scathing verdict on the plans, Mr Burghart told GB News: âThis is just a huge admission of failure, and the fact is that there shouldnât be a need for any of this.
âWhen the Conservatives left office last summer, we had the Rwanda plan in place, and the first thing that Keir Starmer did when he became Prime Minister was scrap it.â
Criticising Sir Keirâs decision further, he added: âThe first thing he did was scrap a deterrent programme, which would have meant that people who crossed the Channel illegally, came to our country illegally, their feet wouldnât have touched the ground.
âThey would have been sent to a third country for processing. That would have been a major deterrent to the gangs and to the people crossing. Instead, Labour tore that up, and hereâs the result.â

Declaring the Labour Government has âlet us downâ with its handling of the migrant crisis, the Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster said: âTheyâre having to use army barracks, having to use massive army barracks to house thousands and thousands of people whoâve come to the country.
âTheyâve really let us down, and itâs time that they admitted that.â
As host Ellie Costello pointed out at the Conservatives used the former RAF Scampton base to house migrants, Mr Burghart responded: âThatâs right, and thatâs one of the reasons why we passed the Rwanda plan in the first place.
âThatâs why we had all of those battles with the courts to try and get the Rwanda plan in place so that we could cut off this terrible trade of people across across the Channel.â

Mr Burghart told GB News that illegal migrants âwouldnât have touched the groundâ had the Rwanda plan still been in place
Speaking to the Peopleâs Channel on Monday, Housing Secretary Steve Reed outlined the plans for âmodular homesâ on the former bases, and how it will prove âlower costâ for Britons.
He explained: âWe know we need to change the system. So what the Government is looking to do is how can we build cheaper accommodation.
âSay modular homes on disused army bases or military bases, and get asylum seekers into that accommodation, which is far lower cost, and save the taxpayer money.
âWeâve already saved a billion by changes weâve made, but we know we need to save more, but then we also need to process the applications faster. The previous Government chose not to process them at all, thatâs why there are so many people in the hotels.â
