Jenn Todryk Gets Emotional Sharing Her Health Update and Tragic Illness

Jenn Todryk — beloved designer, HGTV star, content creator, wife, and mother — has opened up about her ongoing battle with Hashimoto’s disease, revealing just how deeply the chronic illness has shaped her daily life.

Speaking candidly on the second episode of her podcast You, Me & Mike, which she co-hosts with her husband Mike Todryk, Jenn described being in what feels like a constant, relentless struggle. “I am struggling with that all the time, with Hashimoto’s,” she confessed, adding that it is something she is “very actively going through 24/7.”

The emotional admission gave fans a glimpse behind her trademark energy and charisma, showing the unseen toll of her condition.

Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, often leading to hypothyroidism and a host of difficult symptoms. It can cause chronic fatigue, weight gain, sluggishness, sensitivity to cold, and hormonal imbalances that affect nearly every system in the body.

For Jenn, these symptoms have become part of everyday life. She has described living in a constant state of inflammation, getting sick more often than most people, and experiencing waves of exhaustion so intense that she sometimes has to slap herself in the face to stay awake.

She compared the fatigue to “pregnancy exhaustion” or the feeling of working a grueling 12 to 16-hour shift without rest. On top of that, she experiences debilitating flare-ups about once or twice each month, periods she calls “episodes,” when her energy collapses entirely and her body forces her to slow down.

Jenn first received a hypothyroidism diagnosis back in 2014 and was later confirmed to have Hashimoto’s disease. Early on, these flare-ups would derail her completely, often keeping her from working or even getting out of bed. Over the years, however, she has pushed herself to keep going.

These days, she forces herself to get up, get dressed, and do what she can, even if tasks take much longer than they should. She admitted that she often wants to film several reels or host an Amazon Live session, but sometimes only gets through part of her to-do list before exhaustion sets in. She rarely talks about those moments publicly, choosing instead to silently fight through them.

To manage her illness, Jenn has experimented with changes to her diet, including gluten-free, dairy-free, and more recently a high-protein “ketovore” style approach aimed at reducing inflammation. While these shifts have helped at times, they have also come with challenges.

Cutting out too many foods at once once caused her to lose weight too quickly, which was dangerous given her naturally fast metabolism. Beyond diet, she emphasizes the importance of rest, consistency in sleep, stress management, and setting firm boundaries to protect her health. She has learned to recognize the days when her body simply won’t cooperate, and she now treats recovery as a non-negotiable part of her life.

Living with a chronic illness has also shaped how Jenn sees herself and her career. She admits that Hashimoto’s is always on her mind, describing it as something that has become part of her identity.

While she continues to create content, design spaces, and run her business, she sometimes feels behind or frustrated by her body’s limits. She revealed that HGTV had offered a fourth season of her popular show No Demo Reno, but she decided to put it on pause for now, prioritizing her health and family life. Even on good days, she says, the mental weight of her illness is always present.

Despite the struggle, Jenn’s openness has resonated with countless fans. She regularly receives heartfelt messages from people going through similar experiences, many of whom once mistook their symptoms for depression or burnout.

Knowing they are not alone brings them hope. One fan even told her that seeing Jenn speak about her bad days made them finally seek medical help, which led to their own diagnosis of Hashimoto’s. For Jenn, that kind of connection makes the vulnerability worth it.

Jenn’s story is a powerful reminder that chronic illnesses are not occasional inconveniences — they become woven into the fabric of daily life.

Her courage to share her journey shows that strength isn’t just about pushing through; it’s about learning to listen to your body, honoring its limits, and still finding ways to keep moving forward. While her illness may be invisible to the outside world, her resilience shines through in everything she does, offering hope to anyone quietly fighting their own unseen battles.
