Jonathan Knight, best known both as a member of New Kids on the Block and the host of Farmhouse Fixer, isnât letting the cancellation of his HGTV show slow him down. In fact, heâs taking it as an opportunity to plant new seedsâliterally.
Although Farmhouse Fixer appears to be off HGTVâs current slate, Knight is already dreaming up his next big move. In a recent interview with Country Living magazine, he opened up about his long-standing desire to revive the âgardenâ part of the Home and Garden Television network. While the âhomeâ side has flourished with endless renovation shows, the âgardenâ aspect has taken a noticeable backseatâand Knight wants to change that.

âIâve always urged the people at HGTV to bring the garden aspect back to HGTV,â Knight said candidly. âThey say the garden shows donât do well, but I think if there was a really good one, it would do well.â His passion for the outdoors and farming isnât just for showâKnight lives it every day. And he believes audiences might be more receptive than HGTV executives think.
He admits that gardening may not be as popular as it once was, but that hasnât stopped him from crafting a few farm-based ideas to pitch. What he envisions is something much more grounded, more authenticâfar from the high-stakes drama or over-the-top personalities that dominate some reality TV.
Rather than crafting yet another glossy renovation series, Knight wants to take viewers behind the scenes of real farm life. âJust a reality show tagging along with me while I do my daily chores and hopefully teach people things along the way, that would be cool,â he explained. No flashy drama, no manufactured conflictâjust honest, informative, and inspiring content centered around sustainable living, hard work, and growing your own food.
Knightâs fans seem to be completely on board. When he announced the cancellation of Farmhouse Fixer on Instagram back in May, the comment section flooded with supportâand suggestions. One fan wrote, âYou need an HGTV show on how to plan and build a farm/greenhouse! Iâd love to watch and get helpful tips.â Another chimed in with, âI would love to grow some of my own food but have no idea how to start. I wish HGTV had a little more G in their programming!â

Itâs clear the demand is there. Many viewers are hungry for content that offers real-world, practical skillsâespecially as more people become interested in sustainability, self-sufficiency, and healthier living.
Interestingly, Knight isnât the only HGTV personality floating new ideas in public. Home Town duo Ben and Erin Napier recently tossed out their own show concept on Instagramâone where they simply watch movies and break down the set design details. Fans immediately latched onto the idea, especially after Erin suggested they start with Nancy Meyers films, known for their swoon-worthy interiors.
This moment in HGTVâs evolution seems to be marked by uncertaintyâbut also creative opportunity. With the network experimenting and fans voicing their desire for fresh, grounded content, perhaps this is exactly the right time for Knightâs low-drama, farm-forward show to sprout into something real.
Whether HGTV will greenlight his pitch remains to be seen. But one thingâs for sureâJonathan Knightâs next chapter may very well bloom from the garden rows heâs been quietly tending all along.
