Heather Rae El Moussa Breaks Her Silence After HGTV’s Shock Show Cancellations

“Selling Sunset” alum Heather Rae El Moussa has addressed the shocking cancellation of her and husband Tarek El Moussa‘s hit HGTV show, “The Flipping El Moussas,” while discussing the “big internal changes” that are taking place at the beleaguered network.
HGTV has sparked uproar from viewers over the past month after axing a slew of different shows, including “Bargain Block,” “Married to Real Estate,” “Farmhouse Fixer,” “Izzy Does It,” “Christina on the Coast,” and “The Flipping El Moussas.”
Now, Heather, 37, has spoken out for the first time about the network’s controversial decision to pull the plug on her series—admitting that she and Tarek, 43, haven’t actually heard from HGTV since news first broke that their show had been canceled.
Furthermore, the mother of one hinted that the network has not yet confirmed their show has been axed, confessing that she “doesn’t know” what is happening within the company amid the ongoing cancelations.
“We actually haven’t,” she told Us Weekly when asked if she’d been in touch with HGTV. “Obviously, I do know they are going through big internal changes, so I’m not quite sure what’s going on there. I don’t have a statement for that, but I can say how much I’ve enjoyed being on HGTV,” she revealed.

Heather added that she’s thoroughly enjoyed her time filming all of the different projects she’s worked on, while noting that—despite the cancelation news—things could change in the future.
“I love filming ‘The Flip Off’ and ‘Flipping El Moussas,’ and I love flipping houses,” she went on. “But I don’t know internally what’s going on.”
As for “The Flip Off,” which premiered in January, and sees Heather and Tarek going head to head in a renovation battle with fellow HGTV star Christina Haack, the renovations expert said that its future is still up the air—despite the show previously being renewed for a second season.
“Anything could happen. To be honest, it was a great show and it still is a great show. I know that the fans loved it, and Tarek and I really, really enjoyed filming that show. It’s definitely a challenging market right now—and with real estate in general.
“I do know the fans would love to see it back and all three of us would love to see it back. We will definitely throw that idea around if season two comes about. But I love my partners and my husband.
“There’s so many other shows that I would love to do. I would love to get into hosting and I’m definitely open to [new opportunities]. I’ve been on TV for many, many years. I modeled, I shot some commercials and there’s a lot to me that I would love to tap into.
“Tarek and I have super fun banter with each other and we love filming together. But even by myself, there’s so many different shows that I would love to host or be on. But also, I don’t know if I could be away from my baby for months at a time. It would have to be something that doesn’t take me away from the family for too long,” Heather, who shares son Tristan, 17 months, with Tarek, said.
Tarek also shares children Taylor, 14, and Brayden, 9, with his ex turned costar, Christina.
The “big changes” Heather may have been referring to is the reported sharp decrease in viewership the network has faced in the last eight years.
Although the network hasn’t yet revealed the reason for the slew of cancellations, a new report from Deadline claimed that plummeting views are to blame for the removal of the shows.

The outlet, which spoke to numerous sources that produce for the network, said that HGTV averaged about 1.5 million viewers in 2017, citing Nielsen.
However, since then, the network has struggled to bring in audiences, with its average viewership last year coming in at 773,000.
According to Deadline’s story, the company is struggling to attract viewers aged 18 to 49, losing 26% among that demographic in the past year.
In 2017, viewers aged 18 to 49 averaged 425,000, while 2024 saw only 101,000.
The outlet noted that part of the reason for HGTV’s troubles is the large budget it takes to produce and put on a home renovation show.
The overhaul shows reportedly cost upward of $500,000 per episode.
One source told the outlet, “Home reno shows are expensive because all of the materials are jacked up and on delay, the price of wood and marble and everything else is going up, so these shows don’t make as much sense anymore.”
Realtor.com® has reached out to a representative for HGTV for comment.
Since June 18, the hosts of “Bargain Block,” “Married to Real Estate,” “Farmhouse Fixer,” and “Izzy Does It” have all shared the heartbreaking news about their shows’ cancellations.
The first of the shows to be axed was “Bargain Block,” according to its star Keith Bynum, who announced on his social media account that HGTV had chosen not to renew the popular Detroit-based series for a fifth season.
