In memory of the celebrities who have died this year, including Diane Keaton, Robert Redford, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Michelle Trachtenberg and Ozzy Osbourne

In 2025, the entertainment industry said goodbye to many talented people across film, television, music and more.

In January, Aubrey Plaza’s husband, writer-director Jeff Baena, died at age 47. Days later, beloved RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner The Vivienne died at age 32. General Hospital veteran Leslie Charleson, who has been part of the series since 1977, died on Sunday, Jan. 12, at age 79.

Bling Empire: New York star Lynn Ban tragically died weeks after undergoing emergency surgery following a ski accident. In February, Kim Sae-ron — who had been in the South Korean acting industry since 2009 — died at age 24 on Feb. 16.

On Feb. 26, police announced that Michelle Trachtenberg had been found unresponsive in a New York City apartment, and announced that the former child star had died at age 39. The same day, Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that Gene Hackman was found dead at age 95 along with his wife Betsy Arakawa and their dog in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home.

Top Gun star and Batman actor Val Kilmer died of pneumonia at age 65 on April 1, more than 10 years after he had been diagnosed with and recovered from throat cancer. Beloved RuPaul’s Drag Race star Jiggly Caliente died on April 27, days after she had a leg amputation for a “severe infection.”

On June 11, the family of Beach Boys co-founding member Brian Wilson announced that the prolific singer-songwriter died at age 82. Food Network star Anne Burrell died at her Brooklyn, New York, home on June 17 at age 55.

Legendary pop singer Connie Francis died at age 82 on July 17 after she had been hospitalized due to “extreme pain.” On July 21, news was shared that former Cosby Show actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner had died during a family trip to Costa Rica after being “caught in high current.” He was 54. Five years after revealing his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, Black Sabbath frontman and rock legend Ozzy Osbourne died at age 76 on July 22.

On Sept. 16, Oscar-winning actor and director Robert Redford died at age 89 in his Sundance, Utah, home. And on Oct. 11, Diane Keaton died at 79, leaving a stylish and legendary legacy behind.

D’Angelo

R&B and soul legend D’Angelo died after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a source confirmed to PEOPLE. TMZ reported D’Angelo died in New York City on Oct. 14. He was 51.

“Such a sad loss to the passing of D’angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep Peacefully D’ Love You KING,” wrote DJ Premier, who collaborated with the artist on the 1998 song “Devil’s Pie.”

Diane Keaton died on Oct. 11 at age 79, her family shared, though they did not immediately specify the cause.

Her career started in the original Broadway cast of Hair in 1968, and she was cast shortly thereafter in The Godfather. But she cemented her mark in Hollywood as a muse and style icon in Annie Hall (for which she earned the Best Actress Oscar), as well as several other subsequent Woody Allen movies.

Keaton continued to act, write and perform throughout her final years, making an indelible mark in films such as The First Wives Club, Father of the Bride and Something’s Gotta Give.

Dr. Jane Goodall died in the morning of Oct. 1 of “natural causes” while on her U.S. speaking tour, her institute announced via social media. She was 91.

“Dr. Goodall’s discoveries as an ethologist revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world,” read the statement.

Joshua Allen

So You Think You Can Dance season 4 champion Joshua Allen died on Sept. 30 at age 36, a representative for the performer confirmed to PEOPLE. A family member told TMZ that he was hit by a train and taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Rudi Johnson

Former Cincinnati Bengals running back Rudi Johnson died at age 45, the team confirmed to PEOPLE. According to TMZ, he reportedly died after midnight in Florida on Sept. 23.

“Rudi was a fine person and an excellent running back for us,” said Bengals president Mike Brown. “He was dependable and productive as a player, and very popular among his teammates. Everyone liked him and saw him as a dear friend. We are deeply saddened by his passing.”

Sonny Curtis

Songwriter and The Crickets member Sonny Curtis died on Sept. 19 at age 88, his wife of 50 years Louise confirmed to the Associated Press.

“I’m so grateful that I was with him at the end, along with my mom. It was peaceful and he didn’t suffer,” wrote his daughter Sarah on his Facebook page. “He was 88 and he lived a more exceptional life than anyone I’d ever met. He made a mark on this world, and he made a mark on the hearts of all who knew him. It’s a sad day, but what a life.”

Iconic Hollywood actor Robert Redford died at age 89 on Sept. 16 in Sundance, Utah, “the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” Cindi Berger, chairman and CEO of Rogers & Cowen PMK, told PEOPLE in a statement. “He will be missed greatly.”

Grey’s Anatomy actor Brad Everett Young died from injuries sustained in a car crash on Sept. 15, his publicist Paul Christensen confirmed to PEOPLE. He was 46.

“Brad’s passion for both the arts and the people behind them was unmatched. He lived his mission of keeping creativity alive, and his legacy will continue through Dream Loud Official,” said Christensen in a statement.

Ricky Hatton

Boxing legend Ricky Hatton was found dead on Sept. 14 in England. He was 46.

Manchester City confirmed the news in a tribute, calling Hatton “one of City’s most loved and revered supporters.”

Supertramp founding member Rick Davies died on Sept. 6 at age 81. His band’s social media account shared a statement the next day that he had been battling multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, for over 10 years.

“He was the voice and pianist behind Supertramp’s most iconic songs, leaving an indelible mark on rock music history,” read the statement. “His soulful vocals and unmistakable touch on the Wurlitzer became the heartbeat of the bands’ sound.”

Legendary Italian designer Giorgio Armani died at age 91, which his fashion house, Armani, announced in a Sept. 4 press release. The statement said that he “passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones” and “worked until his final days.”

“Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication,” read a statement from his employees and family. “But it is precisely in his spirit that we, the employees and the family members who have always worked alongside Mr. Armani, commit to protecting what he built and to carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love.”

Social media influencer Raymond Harper, known online as Rolling Ray, died at age 28 on Sept. 3, a spokesperson at Maryland’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed to PEOPLE.

Get Smart actor David Ketchum died at age 97, the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed to PEOPLE.

“He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, warmth and timeless television moment — reminding us all that sometimes, the simplest surprise (like someone perched in a mailbox) can yield the biggest smile,” Ketchum’s family said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

Former General Hospital star Tristan Rogers, who played Robert Scorpio in the soap opera from 1980 to 2025, died at age 79 on Aug. 15. Rogers’ cancer diagnosis was revealed in July. His longtime manager Meryl Soodak confirmed his death to ABC 7 Eyewitness News and told the outlet his General Hospital role “meant everything to him.”

“He loved being Scorpio and he created that role from nothing,” Soodak continued. “He was supposed to work a day and he ended up making it into something huge. He was just a genuinely loyal, kind human being and he loved his family.”

“Dr. Dee, our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior, without fail, has finally found her release from the clutches of this world and a body,” he wrote. “We celebrate Danielle Spencer and her contributions as we regret to inform her departure and transition from a long battle with cancer.”

Bobby Whitlock, the founder of the band Derek & The Dominoes, died at age 77 in the early hours of Aug. 10. His manager Carol Kaye confirmed the news to Variety, sharing that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

“My love Bobby looked at life as an adventure taking me by the hand leading me through a world of wonderment from music to poetry and painting,” his wife Coco Carmel Whitlock told TMZ in a statement. “I feel his hands that were so intensely expressive and warm on my face and the small of my back whenever I close my eyes, he is there.”

She ended the tribute with a quote attributed to her late husband: “Life is what you make it, so take it and make it beautiful.”

After being injured in a title fight on Aug. 2, Shigetoshi Kotari died of his injuries on Aug. 8 at age 28.

“The boxing world mourns the tragic passing of Japanese fighter Shigetoshi Kotari, who succumbed to injuries sustained during his Aug. 2 title fight. A warrior in the ring. A fighter in spirit. Gone too soon,” wrote the World Boxing Organization in a statement on X when announcing the young athlete’s death.

James Lovell Jr.

Astronaut James Lovell Jr., the commander of the Apollo 13 mission, died at age 97 on Aug. 7 in Lake Forest, Illinois. His family confirmed his death in a statement to NASA, honoring his “legendary leadership in pioneering human space flight.”

“But, to all of us, he was Dad, Granddad, and the Leader of our family. Most importantly, he was our Hero,” the statement continued, per NBC News. “We will miss his unshakeable optimism, his sense of humor, and the way he made each of us feel we could do the impossible. He was truly one of a kind.”

Grammy-winning Latin musician Eddie Palmieri died at age 88 on Aug. 6 in his New Jersey residence. His youngest daughter Gabriela confirmed to The New York Times that Eddie died following “an extended illness.”

“Eddie Palmieri’s legacy goes far beyond accolades,” read the Instagram post announcing his death. “He was a mentor, a teacher, and a tireless advocate for Latin music and culture. He inspired generations of musicians and moved countless listeners with his artistry, conviction, and unmistakable sound.”

Paul Mario Day, the original vocalist of Iron Maiden, died at age 69. His band MORE confirmed his death via a July 29 Instagram post.

“He was a well loved figure in British rock music and played many memorable shows,” read the statement. “It’s an honour for us to continue to play his music and we will always think of him every time we hit the opening notes to ‘Warhead.’ “

German Olympic gold medalist Laura Dahlmeier died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan on July 28. She was 31.

Per a July 30 post on her official Instagram, the biathlete was hit by falling rocks at an altitude of approximately 18,700 feet while on Laila’s Peak.

Another tribute post read, “Farewell to a wonderful person! Laura enriched the lives of many … She showed us that it’s worth standing up for your dreams and goals and always staying true to yourself.”

Legendary Chicago Cubs second base player Ryne Sandberg died on July 28 at age 65.

“Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Chicago Cubs fans and will be remembered as one of the all-time greats in nearly 150 years of this historic franchise,” said Cubs executive chairman Tom Ricketts on behalf of the franchise and the Hall of Famer’s family.

He continued, “His dedication to and respect for the game, along with his unrelenting integrity, grit, hustle, and competitive fire were hallmarks of his career.”

British jazz singer and Tony-nominated actress Cleo Laine died on July 24 at age 97 in her Wavendon, England, home. The Shires, a U.K. arts center that Laine founded with her late husband, confirmed her death.

“Dame Cleo was a remarkable performer who was loved by audiences around the world and her commitment to ensuring young people had access to great music and music education will continue through the work of The Stables,” said the charity’s chairman David Meadowcroft.

Hulk Hogan

Former pro wrestler and TV personality Hulk Hogan died at age 71, the WWE confirmed on July 24. According to TMZ, medics were sent to Hogan’s home after he reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.

“One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s,” the organization wrote in its tribute.

Alfie Wise

Alfie Wise, Burt Reynolds’ costar in many of his action-comedies, died at age 82 of natural causes on July 22 at Thomas H. Corey Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Palm Beach, Florida. The Altoona Mirror was the first to report the news.

“Whenever there was a company get-together, Alfie was always there, smiling and chatting with everyone… We will greatly miss Alfie’s sense of humor, positive attitude, and charming personality,” wrote Donahue Real Estate, where he worked as an agent after his acting career.

Black Sabbath frontman and rockstar Ozzy Osbourne died at age 76 on July 22, “with family and surrounded by love,” his loved ones wrote in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

Soap opera legend Leslie Charleson died at age 79 on Sunday, Jan. 12, General Hospital‘s executive producer Frank Valentini announced on the show’s Instagram page.

Valentini wrote that Charleson — who has played Monica Quartermaine for nearly 50 years — “was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew.”

“I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit and incredible presence on set,” he continued. “On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her loved ones during this difficult time.”

Jim Varney’s Ernest costar Bill Byrge, who played Bobby in seven movies and one TV show, died at age 86 on Thursday, Jan. 9. His cousin Sharon Chapman announced his death on Facebook, writing, “He was a beautiful soul who made people laugh without even trying.”

“Billy was what some people would call an odd character. He was raised and taught about faith in God. He was taught to be respectful to women,” Chapman later told PEOPLE. “If you met him, you liked him. He was just that type of person.”

The Baltimore Orioles announced the death of the team’s former pitcher Brian Matusz in a statement on Tuesday, Jan. 7. The baseball player was 37.

“A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched,” the statement read. “He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face.”

Mike Rinder, a former Scientologist who turned into an outspoken critic of the organization and co-host of Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, died at age 69. His wife Christie Collbran shared the sad news on Instagram alongside family photos of the couple and their two sons.

“You have been the pillar of stability in our lives, filling our days with your strength, wisdom, love, laughter and devotion. The world will remember you. My best friend, my hero, my love, Michael John Rinder. ❤️,” Collbran wrote in a Jan. 5 post, attaching Rinder’s last words from a blog post titled “Farewell.”

“My only real regret is not having achieved what I said I wanted to — ending the abuses of Scientology, especially disconnection, and seeing Jack into adulthood,” the author and podcaster wrote in his “Farewell” blog. “If you are in any way fighting to end those abuses please keep the flag flying — never give up.”

“There is Peter Yarrow the folk activist legend, and then there is the man, a deeply compassionate man, who changed the lives of so many people in very personal ways,” his children Christopher and Bethany wrote on Instagram in December, asking fans of the “Puff, the Magic Dragon” singer to leave tributes.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season 1 winner James Lee Williams — best known as The Vivienne — died at age 32, the drag artist’s rep Simon Jones announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Jan. 5.

“James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career,” Jones wrote.

“I was there last night at his house. I was playing the piano for him. He was in the hospital bed, and I told him, ‘Friend, is there anything you want to say to your fans?’ And he says, you tell my fans I said, ‘Catch you on the rebound,’ ” Wood’s manager and publicist Manny Gallegos told the New York Post.

Writer-director Jeff Baena, the husband of actress Aubrey Plaza, died at a Los Angeles-area home by suicide. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that an assistant had discovered Baena’s body at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 3. He was 47.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time,” Plaza and the family of the Life After Beth director shared in a statement to PEOPLE.

Donny and Marie Osmond’s brother and an original member of the Osmonds singing group, Wayne Osmond, died at age 73 on Jan. 1 in Salt Lake City following a stroke.

His brothers Donny, Merrill and Jay confirmed his death in social media posts on Thursday, Jan. 2.

“Wayne brought so much light, laughter, and love to everyone who knew him, especially me. He was the ultimate optimist and was loved by everyone,” wrote Donny on Instagram.

Merrill, who drove to the hospital immediately after Wayne’s stroke to say goodbye, shared his own tribute on Facebook: “I’ve never known a man that had more humility. A man with absolute no guile. An individual that was quick to forgive and had the ability to show unconditional love to everyone he ever met.”

On Facebook, Jay called his late brother “a true legend” and his “confidant over the decades.”

“As I sat visiting with him last week at his home he talked about how sad he was that he couldn’t get up in his plane anymore and how much flying brought him peace,” Jay wrote. “What gives me joy is to know that my brother ‘Wings’ has earned his wings and I can only imagine the heights he is soaring right now.”

The creator of the beloved children’s series Thomas the Tank Engine, Britt Allcroft, died at age 81, filmmaker Brannon Carty shared with fans on X per the request of her family.

“Britt was an adoring mother and wife. A visionary producer. She brought so much joy and happiness to people everywhere during her time on Earth,” Carty wrote in his tribute.

He concluded, “While I am devastated by her passing, we can all find comfort in the certainty that her legacy will endure forever through Thomas and his fans around the world.”

Rosita Missoni, an Italian designer and co-founder of the fashion house Missoni, died at age 93. Attilo Fontana, president of the northern Italian region Lombardy, confirmed her death in a statement to AFP.

“The passing of Rosita Missoni, a Lombard stylist and entrepreneur known throughout the world, saddens us,” said Fontana. “A great loss for Italy, Lombardy and for the province of Varese where she was born and lived.”
